The unsettling events in Iraq are fuelling a regional humanitarian crisis where:
The United Nations has reported that up to half a million people have been displaced by the fighting in Mosul, including 300,000 of whom have fled to Erbil and Dohuk in the Kurdistan region of Iraq;
The World Food Programme (WFP) is warning of food scarcity in shops and markets in areas between Mosul and Kurdistan. In its initial response, WFP will deliver approximately 550 metric tons of food a month to the region to address the food shortage.
The World Health Organization (WHO) expressed concern over the spread of measles and polio, since measles is endemic in Mosul and there have already been reports of new polio cases in Iraq this year as a result of the Syria crisis. In response, the UN health agency has reinforced its early-warning system in Mosul and Kurdistan and is launching emergency polio and measles vaccination for displaced people in Erbil and Dohuk.
The World Federation is deeply concerned about the situation in Iraq and the humanitarian impact of the conflict on its people. Since March 2013, efforts have been underway to arrange for food and aid distribution in Iraq for the Holy month of Ramadhan. However, since the development of the recent disturbing events, The World Federation has increased its humanitarian aid for the month of Ramadhan in Iraq.
This year, The World Federation is delivering $50,000 USD in aid across Iraq; this support includes:
Food parcels for displaced families in Erbil and Dohuk
Medical aid for displaced families in Erbil and Dohuk
Tents for displaced families in Erbil and Dohuk
800 food parcels for families in Najaf
Iftaar program for 500 orphans
The people of Iraq are undergoing extremely difficult times. With the threat of war looming in the region, a humanitarian crisis is slowly unfolding leaving families worried about how their basic needs such as food, clothing and shelter will be met in the coming weeks. Please donate generously to the Ramadhan Relief Fund 1435. As we enter the month of Ramadhan, your contribution will help support these men, women and children in their time of need.
